The “Festival at the Oaks” (FOAKS) is a large Solo &
Ensemble Invitational sponsored by parent volunteers from the Middle School
Band Boosters (MSBB) and in part through a generous grant from Target
Corporation. The goal of the festival is to foster a sense of discipline
and independent musicianship through the preparation and performance of a solo
for each student on their instrument. The students will prepare the music
and receive a rating from a qualified music education professional based on a
set of predetermined scoring parameters. Awards will be given for
students achieving scores at the Excellent, Superior, and “Best in Site” rating
levels. We have 136 students, from 3 schools, scheduled for 144 judging
events. There are 8 judges, each will choose a best in site winner as
well as evaluate the events. There are 9 workshop clinicians offering 39
total workshop sessions, covering 3 general topics (jazz improv, maximizing
practicing, audition preparation) and 8 instrument specific topics (flute,
clarinet, double reeds, saxophones, trumpet, horn, low brass and
percussion). Students will also experience a live performance
by the MS Jazz Bands. Students will end the day with an awards ceremony
about 2:45 p.m. in the TOMS Auditorium. Parent and community attendance
is encouraged throughout the day and at the awards ceremony. For more
